Face Shapes: The 6 Types and How to Tell Them Apart

Face shapes describe proportions: how the widths of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw compare, how long your face is, and how your jaw turns toward the chin. Here are the six common shapes side by side, each shown on an AI-generated example portrait with the outline and widths our detector measured on it.

How the six shapes measure

Each width and the length are divided by the cheekbone width, so the numbers compare faces of any size. Real faces vary around these values, and many faces sit between two columns; the face shape detector reports a share for every shape for that reason.

How to find your face shape

  1. Pull your hair back so your forehead, temples and jawline are visible.
  2. Take a straight-on photo at eye level from arm's length or farther; close-up selfies make faces look rounder.
  3. Compare your forehead, cheekbone and jaw widths and your face length, or let the face shape detector measure them for you.
  4. If two shapes are close, read both guides: advice that suits both is a safe choice.
